Actress Angelina Jolie's plastic surgeon is speaking out for the first time since Jolie revealed she had both of her breasts removed.
Earlier this year in an opinion-editorial "My Medical Choice", Jolie said her doctors estimated she had an 87 percent risk for breast cancer before her mastectomy following a genetic test. Her plastic surgeon says proactive people in high risk situations like Jolie can save lives.
"It then makes all of us think well if can happen to them, it can happen to me so then you're more inclined to get checked for example," Board Certified Plastic Surgeon Dr. Jay Orringer. "It's almost a pre-cancerous situation and so some courageous individuals such as ms. Jolie make the bold decision to proactively act prior to the development of cancer."
Genetic testing revealed Jolie carries the BRCA-1 gene, a gene that increases her risk for breast and ovarian cancer
