Protest will Not be Called Off Unless the Students are Set Free - University Students Federation

The Student Federation of the Jaffna University has clearly told that there is no chance of calling off the boycott protest until the detauined students are allowed to go free. representatives of the students federation
met the vice chancellor of the university today at his request, and  had discussions with him.

The subject of restarting the study activities in the university was discussed  during this meeting, when the representatives of the student union told the vice chancellor that there there is no chance of calling off the boycott protest until the four students detained are allowed to go free.

In the meantime the deans of faculties have vehemently rejected the invitation by the Jaffna district army commander Hathurusinghe to hold a conference in Palaly on Friday. They have told that there is no need for them to go to Palaly for talks. They also pointed out that such an activity will pave the way for a full scale army rule in the peninsula. The same stand had been taken earlier by dean of the science faculty and later on by the dean of the arts faculty.

The dean of the medical faculty had also taken the same stand today and had informed the vice chancellor about his decision.

The deans have told that meeting the army high command in Palaly is none of their business, and if the need arises let the council handle the issue, they pointed out. In the meantime the other deans of faculties are expected to take the same decision. Some sources are of the opinion that the  deans of faculties would have been angered with the recent experiences they had when they were insulted at the recent meeting they had with the secretary of the ministry of Education in Colombo.

With the boycott protest by the students and the lecturers still continuing, a dead silence is prevailing in the  university compound.
