France rejects Julian Assange’s appeal to grant him asylum

France has rejected Julian Assange's appeal to grant him asylum. President Francois Hollande has said that Assange "is subject to a European arrest warrant" and a "careful examination shows that, given the judicial and material situation of Mr Assange, France cannot accept his request.

Mr. Assange's situation isn't in jeopardy". Assange has been holed up in the Ecuadorean embassy in London since 2012.

Assange recently made a fresh request to Britain to allow him to step out of the embassy for an hour every day to exercise and soak in some sun. On June 19, Assange, the world's most famous whistle blower completed three years since he has been holed up in the embassy. Ecuador has granted him political asylum under the 1951 Refugee Convention due the ongoing espionage case against him in the United States.

Assange risks extradition to the US from both the UK and Sweden. Assange earlier this week had written an open letter in France's Le Monde newspaper asking for asylum. Assange said "By welcoming me, France would carry out a humanitarian and symbolic gesture, sending encouragement to every journalist and whistle blower". He also said his life was in danger.
