27 killed in stampede during Zakat distribution in Bangladesh

At least 27 people, mostly women and children, were on Friday trampled to death as an early morning event of Zakat clothes distribution triggered a deadly stampede in a Mymensingh town factory in Bangladesh, police officials said.

They said the 5am event at a chewing tobacco factory saw a huge number of dole seekers run towards the gate "as soon as it was opened".

Police detained seven including Shamim Talukder, the owner of Nurani Jorda factory at the town's Atul Chakravorty Road, after the incident, local police station OC told.

Quamrul Islam, the OC, said the 27 bodies had been taken to the Mymensingh Medical College hospital morgue and that he suspected some had been taken away by relatives.

"The death toll will rise in all likelihood," the OC said and added over 50 were injured.
A three-member investigation team has been formed in this connection and asked to report on the findings within three days. No case has been filed so far.

Around 40 people were killed in a similar stampede at a garment factory in the northern city Tangail in 2002.
