A New Year’s Day shooting outside a bar and ensuing car crash left one man in serious condition and injured at least six other people. At around 4:30 a.m. Wednesday morning, an altercation broke out at the Hickory House restaurant on
In a “spray of bullets,” a man in his 20s was shot in the chest and a nearby car was “shot up,” said Staff Sgt. Jeff Taylor of 33 Division.
The shooting victim and four others fled in a car, but shortly after caused a crash involving two other vehicles near Lawrence Ave. E. and Brimley Rd., before hitting a telephone pole.
Two occupants of one of the vehicles they hit were transported to hospital with minor injuries and released. The four friends of the victim were all taken to hospital with injuries, including a broken leg, a broken collarbone, head injuries and hand injuries.
Although police earlier said the shooting victim suffered life-threatening injuries, he is expected to survive. He remains in hospital and police have not been able to speak to him yet due to his condition.
The cause of the crash has not yet been determined, but Taylor said alcohol is suspected to be a factor and the driver may have run a red light.
Police do not have any suspects at this time and are calling for witnesses to come forward. The person whose car was riddled with bullets outside the bar did speak to police, said Taylor.
“This person was caught incidentally in the first event, when shots were fired outside the Hickory House,” he said.
Taylor said the individual was not hurt and is believed to be an innocent bystander who drove to a police station after the shooting.
“I think that occupant was just trying to get the hell out of there,” he said.
The intersection at Lawrence Ave. E. and Brimley Rd. was closed for an investigation until about 12 p.m. Wednesday. TTC Bus routes 54 Lawrence and 21 Brimley were expected to resume their normal route.
