Gas Explosion Injures 5 In Delta

Five persons, including a four-year-old girl sustained severe burns Tuesday night following a gas explosion that rocked a two-bedroom apartment in Warri, the headquarters of Warri South local government area of Delta State.

One of the victims of the unfortunate incident was identified as Favour Ebatefa and three other children of the Ebatefa family, who were all said to have sustained various degrees of burns.

LEADERSHIP gathered that the explosion which rocked the two-bedroom apartment of the victims located along Okere Iborikoko road, Warri, late in the night, threw residents who were awake into confusion as it happened on the heels of a recent incident where over 13 persons were consumed in a bus fire at Effurum, the headquarters of Uvwiew local government area of the state.

Sources said that the explosion occurred after the head of the family identified as Jonathan Ebatefa, who had earlier lit the gas cooker in the kitchen to prepare an evening meal for the family forgot to put it off before going to bed.

Sources said the explosion pulled off the iron door at the entrance into the house as well as the burglary proof, leaving the victims at the mercy of neighbours who rushed to the scene when they heard their cries for help.

Wife of one of the victims, Mrs. Rukevwe Ebatefa said the incident occurred shortly after members of the family had said their evening prayer and gone to bed.

The injured family members were said to have been taken to a hospital in the area where they are currently receiving treatment.
