Post the supermarket disaster, Latvian PM resigns

Latvia's Prime Minister Valdis Dombrovskis resigned on Wednesday after the supermarket roof cave-in incident that claimed the lives of 54 people. Amid pressures to find the reason behind the disaster, Latvia's
Prime Minister, after meeting the President said,"Considering the tragedy and all related circumstances... a new government is needed that has the clear support of parliament. Therefore I have submitted my resignation from the post of prime minister". It was, however, not immediately clear whether the President will hold snap elections or try to form a government with the existing parliament. As per schedule, the next elections are to be held on October 2014. The President said that top officials are likely to meet on December 4 to discuss the disaster. 54 people died in the accident and 40 others were injured were injured when the roof of a Maxima supermarket crashed in the capital city of Riga. Considered among the worst of accidents in Europe in decades, there are speculations that sub-standard materials may have been used in construction or there might have been design flaws.
