Is Apple gearing up to release TWO new phones in September? Rumours suggest the release date for faster and cheaper phones

Apple's next iPhone could be announced on 10 September and go on sale ten days later, an American magazine has claimed. The iPhone 5S is also rumoured to have internet speeds around ten times as fast as 3G.

The site believes that a second, cheaper handset - dubbed the iPhone 6 -  could also be announced as early as 27 September.

It will be the first time in Apple's iPhone history that the company has unveiled two handsets in the same month.

Rumours of a summer release for the iPhone 5S began around April this year when sources close to the electronics giant, including manufacturers, leaked details that production had started.

Then in June, rumours claimed that the California-based company was set to launch a low-cost version of its iPhone 5 handset as early as September.

The latest claims were reported in the International Business Times (IBT).

Dubbed the iPhone Mini, the new, cheaper handset could be made of plastic to keep costs down and may be sold in a range of colours including white, black, pink and blue.

The new iPhone 5S model is believed to look identical to the current iPhone 5 but includes a faster processor and updated camera.

It will also run iOS 7, the major new version of Apple's iPad and iPhone software launched last month.

Both handsets could be released in time for the iOS 7 roll out in October.

Reporter Dave Smith from IBT said: 'By all accounts, the iPhone 5S will look identical its predecessor the iPhone 5, with the exception of a few cosmetic changes.

'Apple has reportedly adopted dual-LED flash for its rear-facing camera, which means that circular flash is now pill-shaped, and many believe the iPhone 5S camera has been improved from the 8-megapixels in the iPhone 5, likely to 12-megapixels.

'Photos leaked in mid-June on MacRumours show off some of these reported features, lead us to believe the iPhone 5S photos are indeed legitimate and the phone is preparing for its September release date.'

He predicts that the iPhone 5S will be the first to feature a new A7 chip designed by Apple.

It is also expected to support LTE-Advanced network speeds - twice as fast as 4G and ten times the speed of 3G web connections.

The iPhone 5S has also reportedly received a battery upgrade from the iPhone 5's 5.45 Whr capacity to a higher capacity of 5.92 Whr.

He also added: 'the biggest new feature inside the iPhone 5S, by all accounts, is said to be the integrated fingerprint sensor embedded directly in the 'home' button, which will likely replace the need for entering usernames and passwords again and again on your phone.'

Apple is also believed to be launching the cheaper model weeks after the iPhone 5S in a bid to rival the likes of Samsung and LTE which both make cheaper designs and offer budget handsets.

According to analyst Brian White from Topeka Capital Markets, the iPhone Mini could be made of plastic and could cost as little as £63 ($99).

Other prices put it much higher at £260 ($400) and it is likely to be closer in price to Apple's iPhone 4.

The current iPhone 5 is made of glass and anodised aluminium - the same material that is used to make Apple laptops.

This design makes it feel sturdy but pushes the price of construction up.

The iPhone Mini could follow Samsung's lead and have a glass front with a plastic case.

Apple traditionally unveils new handsets at an annual event in September and White believes this year's event will be dominated by the rumoured iPhone 5S.

White claimed that the iPhone Mini could be announced before this event so not to distract from the 5S launch, but the latest rumours suggest it could happen afterwards.

Apple does not comment on future products before its launch events.

The speculation seems to contradict comments made by Phil Schiller, Apple's marketing chief, who told Chinese newspaper the Shanghai Evening News earlier this year that 'despite the popularity of cheap smartphones, this well never be the future of Apple's products.'

Other rumours that generated from White's note include that Apple could launch a 4.7inch model - which would put it in close competition with Samsung's 4.8inch Galaxy SIII - as well as a 5.7inch 'phablet-style' device.

These rumours are said to have come from sources within the phone maker's supply chain in Asia.

According to Reuters, these suppliers have been approached with plans for the larger screens, but noted it is still unclear whether Apple will actually launch its flagship product in the larger sizes.

'They constantly change product specifications almost to the final moment, so you're not really sure whether this is the final prototype,' said one person said to have 'direct knowledge of the matter.'
