Sachin spots talented pacer, gets him IPL contract

Sachin Tendulkar has spotted a rookie pace bowling talent and has helped him secure an IPL contract with Mumbai Indians. Fast bowler Javed Khan, who was a 'nets' bowler for Team India before the fourth and

final Test against Australia in New Delhi recently, impressed Tendulkar with his speed, according to a report in "Hindustan Times" newspaper on Sunday. Javed has not played any age-group tournament before and could play a match in the sixth edition of the IPL (IPL 6). The 20-year-old hails from Gajraula village in Uttar Pradesh. After his impressive spell in Team India 'nets' at Feroz Shah Kotla, Tendulkar helped the boy to come for Mumbai Indians' trials. Mumbai franchise captain Ricky Ponting and coach John Wright too were impressed with the boy, who according to Wright bowled at around 140 kmph. Javed signed a Rs 10 lakh (pay for domestic players without first-class cricket experience) contract with Mumbai. "I bowled with the leather (cricket) ball for the first time when I was about 18, around the time I'd come to Delhi to play cricket. Before that I used to play only with a tennis ball at my home," Javed was quoted as saying in the newspaper report. It was reported that during 'nets' Javed had Suresh Raina hopping with his bouncers and also hit the batsman on the body. In Delhi, he had injured an Under-25 batsman by hitting him on the head with a bouncer.
