The Number of Abductins in Jaffna Peninsula in the Recent times Exceeds 45.


The number of abductions in the Jaffna peninsula in the recent times has exceeded 45,according to statistics. These persons have been abducted and later on were said to be with the Terrorism Investigation Division of the police department.


According to the details received by the Sri Lanka Human Rights Commission information of more than 45 persons have been registered with the commission as being abducted.

However several persons, other  than the  number of those registered with the commission are said to have been abducted. It has become known  that threats have been made to the relatives of those  abducted who in fact happened to be former cadres, that no complaints about the abducted should be made to the media or any other sectors

In the meantime Minister Douglas Devananda  who happened to participate in an event that took place in Jaffna has divulged a new information, saying that he did not know anything about the tense situation prevailing in Jaffna. If he had known about such a tense situaton, would have cleared the situation in no time, he added.

Minister Douglas Devananda's saying had shocked those who had participated in the above meeting. The meeting had taken place at  the Navalar Hall in Jaffna yesterday. The event happened to be a get together of a youth organization which was voicing against the issue of alcohol and drugs. Minister Douglas Devananda had participated in the event as the cheif guest.

The Minister in his speech said that the news papers had published news items saying that a tense situation was prevailing in Jaffna, is that true? had any tense events taken place in Jaffna ?,Minister had questioned the people who participated in the meeting.

There was a rustle among the participants of the meeting. The minister who says that he is the people's representative , very often had not known about the abductions. He has to know about this from some one else was the reason for the  rustling, according to the GTN reporter.

Meanwhile having understood that the people were not interested in his speech, quickly changed his stance.

' I too was a cadre in the initial stage. I am also a reason for the present state of the Tamil people. As such I will leave politics only after bringing a solution to the Tamil people' the Minister said at the end of his speech and took his seat,
