Govt. not done enough to implement LLRC

The People's Council for Peace and Goodwill in Jaffna has pointed out to the United Nations country representatives that the government has hardly done anything to strengthen the reconciliation process and to implement the proposals of the Lessons Learnt and Reconciliation Commission (LLRC).

Thirteen UN country representatives, including Sri Lanka's permanent representative to the UN, Dr. Palitha Kohona visited Jaffna recently.
The delegation was received by the Jaffna Security Forces Commander, Major General Mahinda Hathurusinghe at the Palaly Airport. Following the briefing by the Jaffna Security Forces Commander the UN representatives travelled to Jaffna and held a meeting with the People's Council for Peace and Goodwill at the Bishop's House.
The meeting was presided over by the former Vice Chancellor of the University of Jaffna, Professor P. Balasundarampillai.
The Vicar General of the Jaffna Catholic Diocese, Rev. Gnanapragasam, explaining the current situation in Jaffna and said the people in the North expected more from the government in strengthening reconciliation. "Hardly any move has been made by the government in stabilizing the reconciliation process and the Tamils are disappointed about the delays over the moves adopted to reach a political solution to the ethnic question," the Vicar General said.
The UN delegates also verified the situation regarding the alleged land grabbing by the Security Forces in the North and on the state of the Internally Displaced Persons (IDPs).
Prof. Balsundarampillai said a large number of IDPs have not yet been resettled in their original places of residence and the lands and assets of the majority have not yet been returned to them.
The UN delegation earlier met the Tamil National Alliance (TNA) parliamentarians in Colombo prior to their visit to Jaffna.
The UN delegates were from Japan, Nigeria, South Africa and several other countries.
