In successive incidents of attacks against Indian fishermen in the state, seven fishermen from Karaikal returned ashore with serious injuries allegedly caused by Sri Lankan Navy. This was the second such incident in the past week.
Seven fishermen from Karaikalmedu and Kilinjalmedu hamlets had set off for fishing on Friday and were fishing South East of Kodiakkarai, when they were intercepted by three Sri Lankan fishing boats past midnight on Friday.
According to their accounts, their boat was encircled by the three fishing boats that also had two uniformed personnel on board.
The fishermen have alleged attacks with rods and sickles, and that their catch, along with fishing nets were thrown overboard.
The bruised men arrived in Karaikal at the Karaikal harbour and were taken to Karaikal Government Hospital.
One of them has since been shifted to Puducherry GH. The remand of 26-Karaikal based fishermen, who were taken to custody last week for breach of IMBL, has further been extended up to April 19.
