Toronto cleans up from floods, more rain expected

Toronto is cleaning up after more than a month’s worth of rain fell on the GTA on Monday, crippling city infrastructure and causing traffic chaos – but the worst isn’t over.

Environment Canada has issued a special weather statement for Toronto and the GTA, warning that thunderstorms could develop overnight and into Wednesday. CityNews meteorologist Natasha Ramsahai said the rainfall is expected in two waves.

“Overnight tonight and into tomorrow morning we have some significant rain coming in,” she said, forecasting 5-15 millimetres in some areas while other areas could top 20 millimetres. “It’s likely going to be a slow morning commute again.”

“We do have a second round coming in tomorrow afternoon as well so it’s going to be a one-two punch tomorrow.”

Monday’s rains caused flooded basements and widespread power outages, with 70,000 Toronto Hydro customers without power as of 3:30 p.m. on Tuesday. That was down from the peak of 300,000, but an increase from earlier Tuesday. The outages were in Etobicoke and the Liberty Village area.
