Debutant Shikhar Dhawan remained unbeaten at 185 while his partner Murali Vijay scored 83 not out as India ended Day 3 with 283/0 in their first innings of the third Test against Australia in Mohali. Scorecard
Dhawan and Vijay kept India in a strong position and recorded the highest opening partnership against Australia. India now trail Australia by 125 runs. Dhawan smashed 33 fours and two sixes in his innings while Vijay hit 10 boundaries two sixes in his 83-run knock. Earlier, Dhawan smashed the fastest-ever century on debut in Test cricket. Dhawan's incredible ton came off just 85 balls with 21 boundaries and became the 13th Indian cricketer to score a century on debut.The Delhi left-hander surpassed the record of earlier fastest hundred on debut, which was in the name of West Indian Dwayne Smith, who reached his ton in 93 balls in the third Test against South Africa in Cape Town in January 2004. In the process, Dhawan also became the highest individual scorer for India on debut, beating the previous record held by Gundappa Vishwanath (137) against Australia at the Eden Gardens in 1969-70. It was a breathtaking assault by Dhawan who unleashed a flurry of strokes on both sides of the wicket to leave the visitors in a daze as the Indians scored at a brisk run rate of 4.87. Australia innings Mitchell Starc (99) and Steven Smith (92) steered Australia to 408 in their first innings. Starc and Smith may be disappointed on not hitting tons but Australia came back to cross the 400-mark after losing quick wickets on Day 2. Smith controlled the Australian innings on Day 2 alongside Starc and duo put up an eighth wicket partnership of 92 runs. Starc scored 99 in just 144 balls with 14 fours. Pragyan Ojha got the breakthrough dismissing Smith with a flighted ball. Smith moved forward to place the ball but misjudged the flight and spin missing it completely and ended up being stumped by MS Dhoni. Starc was caught behind by Dhoni once again off Ishant Sharma. Earlier Report The visitors resumed the day at 273/7. Overnight batsmen Steve Smith and Mitchell Starc made a positive start in the first half hour and soon took the team past 300. Smith reached his highest Test score of 78. Smith-Starc duo completed 50-run partnership for the eighth wicket. In the first eight overs of the session on third day, they added 37 runs.
